Mitigation Bank Development : To mitigate means to make less harsh or hostile. Mitigation banking is the preservation, enhancement, restoration or creation of a wetland, stream, or habitat conservation area which offsets, or compensates for, expected adverse impacts to similar, nearby ecosystems. The goal is to replace the exact function and value of the specific wetland habitats that would be adversely affected by a proposed activity or project. Waterman Mitigation Partners develops mitigation banks for the specific needs of its partners, providing a ‘no net loss’ mitigation solutions.
Mitigation Credit Sales : Environmental mitigation is typically a part of an environmental crediting system established by governing bodies which involves allocating debits and credits. Debits occur in situations where a natural resource has been destroyed or severely impaired and credits are given in situations where a natural resource has been deemed to be improved or preserved. Therefore, when an entity such as a business or individual has a debit they are required to purchase a credit. Mitigation banks are large mitigation projects established to provide credit to multiple parties in advance of development when such environmental compensation cannot be achieved at the development site or is not seen as beneficial to the environment.
Advanced Compensatory Mitigation Development : For unavoidable impacts, compensatory mitigation is required to replace the loss of wetland and aquatic resource functions in a watershed. Compensatory mitigation refers to the restoration, establishment, enhancement, or in certain circumstances preservation of wetlands, streams or other aquatic resources for the purpose of offsetting unavoidable adverse impacts.

In-Lieu Fee Mitigation : In this approach to mitigation, a permittee pays a fee in lieu of conducting project-specific mitigation or buying credits from a mitigation bank. ILF mitigation is used mainly to compensate for minor impacts to wetlands when better approaches to compensation are not available, practicable, or when the use of an ILF is in the best interest of the environment. Compensation for larger impacts is usually provided by project-specific mitigation or a mitigation bank.
